Growing potatoes at home can be a lot of fun, especially if you are a potato lover!

With one potato, you can grow many more. Follow these simple steps to set up a mini potato garden at home.

One of the problems with growing potatoes in the ground is that they can spread out and take over more space than expected. By using a potato planting bag, you can keep them in a relatively small area and make your garden easier to manage.

Potato Growing Bag Options

No doubt you may have seen various options for potato growing in pots, ranging from heavy-duty fabric bags to thinner plastic bag types and even stacked car tires. A quick word of warning on using car tires: while it may seem like a simple idea, they can leach unwanted materials into the soil, which may be absorbed by the plants.

So it is important to grow in bags made with suitable, food-safe materials.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ “The potato bags are well made and sturdy. I looked at other potato bags but they do not compare. The fabric is of good quality and the product arrived with clear instructions. I look forward to harvesting my potatoes.”

Where to Buy Potato Grow Bags

The big difference with our bags is the thickness of the fabric used and the way the bags are made. We use food-safe extra thick geofelt fabric that is strong, durable, and made for outdoor use. It is designed to last for multiple growing seasons, so you can reuse the same bag year after year.

The stitching is also built for outdoor use and double stitched because there is no point in having strong fabric if the stitching fails first. We want to offer practical garden products that are useful, reusable, and made with long-term use in mind.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ “Great quality. Have planted three bags with seed potatoes. I really like the construction of these bags. Well stitched together.”

Potato Planter Bag Sizes

Our potato grow bags come in 2 easy sizes.

Small Potato Grow Bag: 350mm wide and 450mm tall

Plant 2–3 pieces of potato in each bag and you may be able to harvest around 20–30 potatoes, depending on growing conditions, care, and plant variety.

Large Potato Grow Bag: 550mm wide and 400mm tall

Plant 5–6 pieces of potato in each bag and you may be able to harvest around 50 potatoes, depending on growing conditions, care, and plant variety.

It is a good idea to get a few bags and start a new bag every few weeks so you can have potatoes ready to harvest at different times.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ “These are great, big enough and sturdy too, not just cheap fabric but strong and they stand up even when only half full. Flaps are a cool idea too.”

Why Do Potato Grow Bags Have a Side Flap?

This clever feature allows you to harvest some smaller potatoes during the growing season. It usually takes about 90–120 days to grow potatoes through their full cycle, but you can start checking through the side flap from about 60 days on.

The large potato bag has flaps on 2 sides to make it easier to reach in. Some other bags only have one flap, which may make it harder to access potatoes on the opposite side until the crop has finished.

The Velcro-style flap allows you to easily seal the opening back up so the soil does not spill out.

Best Time to Plant Potatoes

Potato leaves do not like frost, so their growing cycle should be planned around your local climate. They also do not like extremely hot weather. In general, potatoes grow best in cooler seasons with mild temperatures.

For many areas, potatoes are commonly planted in early spring after the danger of hard frost has passed. In warmer regions, they may also be planted in late summer or early fall for a second growing season.

Always check your local growing zone and weather conditions before planting.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ “Very superior planter design and material. The little hatch is a good idea for easy harvesting instead of digging out from the top.”

How to Grow Potatoes in a Bag

  1. Fill the bag with potting mix to about one-third full.

  2. Plant seed potatoes or potatoes that have started sprouting. Bury them beneath the soil.

  3. Water them in and wait until the plants reach about 12cm tall. Then add more potting mix until only the top leaves of each plant are showing. Keep the soil damp but not overly wet. Wait for the plants to grow another 12cm approximately, then add more soil. Repeat this process until you reach the top of the bag. This is called hilling and helps prevent potatoes from going green when exposed to sunlight.

  4. The leaves will continue to grow above that level, while the potatoes grow in the soil underneath along the buried stems. You can access them through the side flap.

  5. The full growing cycle is around 3–4 months. Once the plant dies back, stop watering and leave it for another 2 weeks to help the skins firm up. Then tip the soil out to collect your harvest.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ “Fantastic purchase. We are growing our vegetables very successfully in these bags. Extremely happy with our purchase.”
